About BeNG - who are we ?

The Berlin NeXT User Group (BeNG) was established in 1990, and is an informal gathering of people interested in NeXT/NEXTSTEP.

NeXT was acquired by Apple Computer in December 1996, and is the developer of NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP, a visionary operating system and development environment, which is still one of the most innovative pieces of software today.

Starting in early 1997, Apple Computer is developing a successor to the NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP operating system. This OS (code-named "Rhapsody") has been assigned the name "Mac OS X Server" and is expected to ship in late 1998. It will combine the best of both worlds: NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP with Mac OS, Apple's acclaimed operating system for the Macintosh line. Rhapsody serves as a basis for Mac OS X ("Mac OS ten").

The Berlin NeXT User Group sees itself as the primary contact point in the greater Berlin area for all matters concerning the above operating systems and development environments. Consequently, in addition to two FTP servers and a web server that we maintain, we offer a monthly meeting to ask questions, learn about NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP and Rhapsody, and meet others who share the same interests.

The BeNG has no rules or other formal form of organization, it's not even a society or club. All our activities are free, and are supported (including financially!) and arranged by our participants in their free time. All types of moral, practical, or financial contributions are most welcome!

We operate two mailing lists for announcements and discussions around NeXT and Apple technologies and a FTP archive for NEXTSTEP/OPENSTEP software. Our Rhapsody FTP archive ist still under construction. More information is available by sending a mail to about@beng.org.

We usually meet the third monday each month at 20.00 hours. If this day is a holiday the meeting will be held the next week.
